Planning a trip to Hawaii usually comes with a pretty long list: flights, hotel reservations, activities, dinner reservations—and somewhere in there, you may be thinking about family photos.

One of the questions I often hear is: How far in advance should I book a family photographer in Hawaii?

The short answer? Earlier is always better, especially if you have a specific date or sunset session in mind.

As an Oahu family photographer, I photograph many families who are visiting Hawaii on vacation, and a little planning ahead can make the entire experience much easier.

How Far in Advance Should You Book?

Ideally, I recommend reaching out about 1–3 months before your trip to Oahu.

That usually gives you more choices when it comes to dates, locations and session times.

During popular travel periods—such as summer, spring break and the holidays—booking even earlier is a good idea.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t reach out if your trip is coming up soon, though! I occasionally have last-minute openings, so it’s always worth asking.

Sunset Sessions Tend to Book First

There’s a reason everyone loves Hawaii at sunset.

The softer light, warm colors and beautiful skies can create an incredible backdrop for family photos. Because of that, sunset sessions are often some of the first times to fill on my calendar.

If having those dreamy golden-hour photos is important to you, I recommend reserving your date as soon as your travel plans are confirmed.

Sunrise can also be absolutely beautiful—and depending on your family, location and itinerary, it may actually be the better choice.

What Day of Your Hawaii Vacation Should You Schedule Family Photos?

This is something people don’t always think about!

Whenever possible, I recommend scheduling your family photos toward the beginning or middle of your vacation rather than your very last evening on Oahu.

Why?

Hawaii weather can be unpredictable. We can have sunshine in one part of the island and rain in another. Leaving a little room in your vacation schedule gives us more flexibility if Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate.

It also means you won’t spend your entire vacation worrying about keeping everyone’s outfits clean until photo day. 😉

Don’t Schedule Your Session Right After You Arrive

While I love scheduling sessions earlier in a family’s vacation, I usually wouldn’t choose the evening you land.

Travel days can be exhausting—especially when you’re traveling with children or coming from the mainland and adjusting to the time difference.

Give everyone a little time to settle in, sleep and enjoy Hawaii before asking them to get dressed up for family photos.

Day two, three or four can be a great sweet spot.

Think About Your Other Vacation Plans

Before choosing your photo session date, take a quick look at the rest of your itinerary.

If you’re planning a long hiking day, surf lesson, boat excursion or full day exploring the island, you probably don’t want to schedule family photos immediately afterward.

And one very Hawaii-specific tip: think about sunburn!

If family photos are important to you, consider scheduling them before several full beach or pool days. A bright red sunburn isn’t exactly the souvenir most people want documented in their family portraits. 😂

Should You Choose Your Photographer Before Your Location?

Absolutely.

You don’t need to know exactly where you want your photos taken before reaching out.

Part of my job as your photographer is helping you choose a location that works for your family, the type of scenery you love, where you’re staying and the overall feeling you want for your photos.

Oahu has everything from beautiful beaches and mountain views to palm trees, open fields and dramatic landscapes. The right location can look different for every family.

Sometimes cancellations or schedule changes create unexpected openings.

Even if your Hawaii vacation is only a week or two away, it’s always worth checking availability rather than assuming it’s too late.

Family Photos Are One Vacation Activity You’ll Keep Forever

There are so many incredible things to do while visiting Hawaii, but family photos are a little different.

Long after the vacation is over, the kids have grown and the suitcases are unpacked, you’ll still have photographs that bring you right back to that time together.
