There is something so special about photographing families in Kahala. With its beautiful shoreline, soft tropical light, swaying palm trees, and peaceful atmosphere, it offers the perfect setting for relaxed and timeless family photos on Oahu.

For this family session, we spent the evening exploring the beach and letting everything unfold naturally. Rather than focusing on perfectly posed photographs, I love creating space for families to simply enjoy being together—walking along the water, cuddling their little ones, laughing, and soaking in their time in Hawaii.

Family Photos in Kahala, Hawaii

Kahala is one of my favorite locations for family photography in Honolulu because it gives us a beautiful combination of tropical scenery and a relaxed island feel.

The beach creates a gorgeous neutral backdrop that keeps the focus on your family, while the greenery and palms add that unmistakable Hawaii feeling without overwhelming the photographs.

Timing also makes such a difference. I typically recommend photographing close to sunset, when the light becomes softer and more flattering. That beautiful evening glow creates the warm, dreamy look you see throughout many of my Oahu family sessions.

What to Wear for Your Oahu Family Photos

One of the questions I receive most often is what to wear for a family photo session in Hawaii.

I recommend choosing outfits that coordinate rather than match exactly. Soft neutrals, creams, earthy tones, muted blues, and subtle textures photograph beautifully against the colors of the island.

Most importantly, your clothing should feel like you. Hawaii family photos should feel effortless, comfortable, and connected to the beautiful surroundings.

My approach to family photography is relaxed and connection-focused.

I’ll guide you throughout the session so you never have to wonder what to do, but I also leave room for the little unscripted moments—the ones that often become my favorite photographs.

Your children don’t need to stand perfectly still or smile at the camera the entire time. Some of the most meaningful images happen when everyone forgets about the camera for a moment and simply enjoys being together.
