There is something so special about photographing a surprise proposal in Hawaii. The anticipation, the nerves, and then that one incredible moment when everything changes.
Jie planned the sweetest surprise proposal for Kateryna at Mokuleia Beach on Oahu’s North Shore. With a quiet stretch of beach, beautiful ocean views, and the mountains in the distance, it was the perfect setting for such an unforgettable moment.
And, of course, she said yes! 💍
A Surprise Proposal at Mokuleia Beach
Mokuleia Beach is one of my favorite locations for couples looking for a quieter and more intimate setting on Oahu.
Located on the North Shore, Mokuleia feels completely different from some of the busier beaches around Honolulu and Waikiki. The beautiful coastline, open beach, mountain views, and peaceful atmosphere make it an amazing location for a surprise proposal in Hawaii.
For Jie and Kateryna, it gave us exactly what we wanted: a beautiful setting where the moment could still feel private and completely about the two of them.
Jie and I had a plan for where the proposal would happen so I could photograph everything while keeping the surprise intact.
Then came the moment.
Jie got down on one knee, Kateryna realized what was happening, and I was able to capture all of those emotions as they unfolded.
Those are the photographs I love the most—the ones you simply cannot recreate.
Engagement Photos After the Proposal
After she said yes, we turned the rest of their session into engagement photos around Mokuleia Beach.
This is one of my favorite parts of photographing surprise proposals. Once the secret is finally out, all of the nerves disappear and the excitement takes over.
There are hugs, laughter, kisses, happy tears, and usually a lot of looking down at the new ring!
Instead of ending the photography after the proposal itself, we get to document those first moments of being newly engaged and create beautiful portraits together.
It makes the entire gallery tell the story—not just the moment someone gets down on one knee, but everything that comes immediately afterward.
Why Choose Mokuleia Beach for Your Oahu Proposal?
If you’re planning a proposal on Oahu and want a location that feels romantic, natural, and a little more secluded, Mokuleia Beach is definitely worth considering.
The North Shore scenery gives you a gorgeous combination of ocean, beach, greenery, and mountains without the resort feel of Waikiki or Ko Olina.
It is especially beautiful for couples who want their Hawaii proposal photos to feel relaxed and connected to the natural landscape of the island.
Every proposal is different, though, which is why I love helping couples choose a location that fits what they’re envisioning.
Planning a Surprise Proposal in Hawaii
There are already enough nerves involved in asking one of the biggest questions of your life. The photography shouldn’t be another thing you have to worry about.
As an Oahu proposal photographer, I can help you plan the photography portion ahead of time so you know exactly where to go and what to expect.
We can coordinate the location, timing, where you should stand, where I’ll be positioned, and how we’ll recognize each other—all without ruining the surprise.
Then you can focus on the important part: asking the question.
And I’ll be there to capture the answer. 🤍
