As an Oahu photographer for over nine years, I’ve had the privilege of photographing hundreds of families, couples, expecting mothers, surprise proposals, and intimate weddings all across the island. During that time, I’ve explored countless beaches, mountain lookouts, tropical forests, and hidden gems to find the places that photograph beautifully in every season.

One thing I’ve learned is that every location tells a different story.

Some offer dramatic mountain views, while others are known for crystal-clear turquoise water, swaying palm trees, or breathtaking Hawaiian sunsets. Some beaches are perfect for families with little ones because they’re easy to access and have plenty of space to play. Others are ideal for adventurous couples looking for dramatic scenery or a more secluded, romantic feel.

This guide isn’t just a list of beautiful places—it’s based on my personal experience photographing real clients throughout the years. My goal is to help you choose a location that not only looks incredible but also fits your family’s personality and the type of memories you want to create.

Whether you’re visiting Hawaii for the first time or you’re lucky enough to call Oahu home, I hope this guide helps you discover a place you’ll fall in love with.

Let’s dive into my favorite photography locations on Oahu!

1. Kualoa Regional Park

 My Rating: 10/10

If someone asked me to photograph at only one location on Oahu for the rest of my career, my answer would be Kualoa Regional Park.

This location has everything people dream of when they picture Hawaii. Towering green mountains, the iconic view of Mokoliʻi (Chinaman’s Hat), a peaceful shoreline, tropical trees, and wide-open grassy areas all come together to create one of the most breathtaking backdrops on the island.

One of the reasons I recommend Kualoa so often is because of the incredible variety. During one session we can photograph on the dock, along the shoreline, beneath the trees, and with the dramatic mountain backdrop without ever leaving the park. It gives your gallery several completely different looks while keeping the session relaxed and easy.

It’s also one of my favorite locations for families with young children. There’s plenty of room to run, play, and explore, allowing me to capture genuine moments instead of stiff poses.

Photographer Tip: If you’re having trouble deciding on a location, Kualoa Regional Park is almost always my first recommendation because it truly offers the best of Oahu.

2. Secret Island (Kualoa Ranch)

 My Rating: 9.9/10

If you’re looking for a location that feels private, tropical, and uniquely Hawaiian, Secret Island is hard to beat.

Located beside Kualoa Ranch, this hidden gem combines swaying palm trees, calm turquoise water, dramatic mountain views, and a peaceful atmosphere that feels worlds away from the crowds. Every direction offers another beautiful backdrop, making it easy to create a gallery filled with variety.

Because access is more limited than many public beaches, Secret Island has a quieter, more exclusive feel. It’s perfect for couples wanting a romantic setting or families hoping for a relaxed experience away from busy tourist areas.

Best Time: Late Afternoon only

Photographer Tip: Neutral outfits like cream, beige, sage green, and soft blue complement the tropical scenery beautifully without distracting from the landscape.

3. Lanikai Beach

 My Rating: 9.8/10

Lanikai Beach is one of the most photographed beaches in Hawaii, and it’s easy to understand why. The powdery white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and views of the Mokulua Islands create one of the most iconic landscapes on Oahu.

The secret to photographing Lanikai is choosing the right time of day. Since the beach faces east, sunrise offers soft pastel skies, beautiful colors, and the most flattering light for portraits. By the afternoon, the beach becomes much busier and the lighting is considerably harsher.

If waking up early is an option, Lanikai will reward you with one of the most peaceful and beautiful photography experiences on the island.

If you’re still deciding what time of day to book your session, this guide explains the difference between sunrise and sunset photography on Oahu.

Photographer Tip: Arriving about 20 minutes before sunrise allows us to capture the beautiful pastel colors before the sun comes over the horizon.

4. Waimanalo Beach

 My Rating: 9.8/10

If you’re imagining a classic Hawaiian beach with soft white sand, turquoise water, and dramatic mountain views, Waimanalo Beach is one of the best choices on Oahu.

One of my favorite things about Waimanalo is how spacious it feels. Even during busy seasons, it’s usually easy to find a quieter section of the beach where you can relax and enjoy your session without feeling surrounded by people. The wide shoreline also gives children plenty of room to run and play, which often leads to the most natural and joyful photographs.

The warm evening light here is beautiful, making Waimanalo a wonderful choice for families, maternity sessions, and couples looking for timeless beach portraits.

Photographer Tip: Waimanalo is one of my favorite locations for families because there’s so much space for kids to simply be themselves.

5. Makua Beach

 My Rating: 9.7/10

If you’re willing to drive a little farther from Waikiki, Makua Beach rewards you with one of the most spectacular sunsets on Oahu. Located on the island’s west side, this beach feels peaceful, untouched, and far less crowded than many of the more popular locations.

What makes Makua unique is the dramatic contrast between the Waianae Mountains and the open shoreline. As the sun begins to set, the mountains glow with warm light while the sky often fills with shades of pink, orange, and gold. Every sunset is different, making each session feel completely unique.

The beach is large enough that we can create both sweeping landscape portraits and intimate moments near the shoreline, giving your final gallery plenty of variety.

Best Time: Sunset

Photographer Tip: Allow a little extra travel time to reach Makua. Once you arrive, you’ll quickly understand why it’s one of my favorite places to photograph on Oahu.

6. Sandy Beach

 My Rating: 9.6/10

If you’re looking for a location with a little more drama and personality, Sandy Beach is one of my favorite places to photograph on Oahu. Unlike the island’s softer white-sand beaches, Sandy Beach offers rugged lava rock formations, powerful ocean waves, golden sand, and incredible coastal views that create a bold, adventurous feel.

One of the things I love most about this location is the variety. During a single session, we can capture romantic portraits on the lava rocks, playful moments along the shoreline, and wide scenic images that showcase Oahu’s dramatic coastline. It feels like several locations in one, giving your gallery a unique mix of images.

Although Sandy Beach is famous for its strong shore break, we always stay in safe areas away from the waves while still taking advantage of the incredible scenery. If you’re dreaming of photos that feel adventurous while still showcasing Hawaii’s natural beauty, Sandy Beach is an excellent choice.

7. Secret Beach at Ko Olina

 My Rating: 9.5/10

Hidden just beyond the Four Seasons Resort, Secret Beach at Ko Olina is one of Oahu’s best-kept secrets. While many visitors immediately think of the nearby lagoons, Secret Beach offers a much more natural setting with lava rocks, palm trees, tide pools, and beautiful ocean views.

I love recommending this location because it feels tucked away from the resort crowds while still being incredibly convenient for guests staying in Ko Olina. The sunsets here are beautiful, and the changing coastline gives us plenty of variety throughout your session. From rocky shoreline portraits to sandy beach moments and palm tree backdrops, every gallery feels unique.

Reaching the beach requires a short walk over uneven rocks, so I always recommend bringing comfortable sandals before changing into your barefoot beach look. It’s a small adventure that’s well worth it once you see the scenery.

Photographer Tip: If you’re staying at Aulani or the Four Seasons, Secret Beach is one of my favorite nearby locations for a quieter, more natural Hawaiian backdrop.

8. Kahala Beach

 My Rating: 9.4/10

Just minutes from Waikiki, Kahala Beach offers a quieter and more relaxed alternative to the busy tourist beaches. With swaying palm trees, calm water, and soft evening light, it’s perfect for families who want beautiful beach portraits without traveling far from Honolulu.

One of the biggest advantages of Kahala is its convenience. It’s an excellent option if you’re staying in Waikiki, have young children, or simply want to spend less time driving and more time enjoying your vacation. The beach has a peaceful atmosphere, and the mix of palm trees and shoreline gives us beautiful variety throughout the session.

If you’re looking for timeless beach portraits in a location that’s easy to reach, Kahala is always a wonderful choice.

Photographer Tip: This location pairs beautifully with neutral outfits and is ideal for families with little ones who may not want a long drive.

9. Crouching Lion

 My Rating: 9.5/10

If you’re looking for a location that’s completely different from the beach, Crouching Lion offers one of the most spectacular views on Oahu. After a short hike, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Windward Coast, lush green mountains, and the sparkling Pacific Ocean.

This location is perfect for adventurous couples who want something truly unique. The dramatic scenery creates breathtaking portraits that feel more like an epic landscape than a traditional beach session. It’s also one of my favorite spots for surprise proposals because of the incredible view at the top.

Since there is a hike, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes and bringing your photo shoes in a bag. The climb is well worth it, and the scenery is unforgettable.

10. Lanai Lookout

 My Rating: 9.3/10

If dramatic ocean cliffs and crashing waves are your style, Lanai Lookout is one of the most striking photography locations on Oahu. Instead of soft sandy beaches, you’ll find rugged lava rock formations, panoramic ocean views, and a coastline that showcases Hawaii’s raw natural beauty.

I especially love photographing couples here because the dramatic scenery creates bold, artistic images that feel completely different from a traditional beach session. Every visit is unique depending on the light and ocean conditions, making every gallery one of a kind.

Because the area is often breezy, flowing dresses and long veils photograph beautifully, adding movement and elegance to your images.

Photographer Tip: If you’re looking for a location with dramatic scenery and an adventurous feel, Lanai Lookout is one of the best choices on the island.

11. Mokulēʻia Beach

 My Rating: 9.2/10

If you’re looking for a quieter North Shore location, Mokulēʻia Beach is one of my favorite hidden gems. Wide stretches of sand, driftwood, ironwood trees, and fewer crowds give this beach a peaceful, natural feel that’s perfect for relaxed photography sessions.

One of the things I love most about Mokulēʻia is its simplicity. Instead of busy beaches filled with visitors, you’ll often find long open stretches of shoreline where you can simply enjoy the moment. It’s a wonderful location for families who want children to run freely or couples looking for a more intimate atmosphere.

Photographer Tip: If you’re already spending the day exploring Oahu’s North Shore, Mokulēʻia is the perfect place to finish your day with a sunset photography session.

12. Kawela Bay

 My Rating: 9.4/10

If you’re looking for a location that combines tropical jungle scenery with a secluded beach, Kawela Bay is one of the most unique places on Oahu. The walk to the beach takes you beneath towering trees before opening up to a quiet cove surrounded by palm trees and calm water.

What makes Kawela Bay special is the variety. During one session we can photograph beneath the palms, along the forest path, and on the beach, giving your final gallery several completely different looks without traveling anywhere else.

It’s one of my favorite locations for couples and maternity sessions because it feels private, peaceful, and incredibly romantic.

Photographer Tip: If you can’t decide between a tropical jungle and a beach, Kawela Bay gives you both.

13. Judd Trail

 My Rating: 9.4/10

Not every incredible photography location on Oahu is a beach, and Judd Trail is the perfect example. Nestled in the lush Nuʻuanu rainforest, this hidden trail offers towering bamboo, tropical greenery, winding pathways, and a peaceful stream that feels completely different from anywhere else on the island.

I often recommend Judd Trail to clients looking for something unique. The shaded forest creates beautiful, soft light throughout the day, and the natural surroundings give every session a timeless, storybook feel. It’s especially beautiful after light rain when the greenery becomes even more vibrant.

14. Kahana Bay

 My Rating: 9.3/10

Located on Oahu’s windward coast, Kahana Bay offers a peaceful setting surrounded by lush mountains and calm water. It’s one of those locations that often surprises people because it feels untouched and far removed from the busier parts of the island.

What I love about Kahana Bay is the sense of tranquility. The combination of mountain views, tropical greenery, and quiet shoreline creates a relaxed atmosphere that’s perfect for families and couples who want a slower-paced session. It’s also a beautiful location if you’re hoping to capture more of Oahu’s natural landscape in your photographs.

15. Yokohama Bay

 My Rating: 9.1/10

If you’re looking for one of the most untouched beaches on Oahu, Yokohama Bay is an incredible choice. Located at the end of Farrington Highway on the island’s west side, this remote beach offers dramatic mountain scenery, expansive shoreline, and unforgettable sunsets.

Because it’s farther from Waikiki, Yokohama Bay is often much quieter than many of Oahu’s popular beaches. The peaceful setting allows you to slow down, enjoy the moment, and create photographs that truly showcase Hawaii’s natural beauty.

It’s the perfect location for adventurous couples or families who don’t mind a little extra drive in exchange for incredible scenery.

One of the questions I’m asked most often is, “Which location should we choose?” My answer is always the same—it depends on the story you want your photos to tell.

If you love dramatic mountain views, Kualoa Regional Park or Crouching Lion may be the perfect fit. If you’re dreaming of crystal-clear water and white sand, Lanikai or Waimanalo are wonderful choices. For adventurous couples, Lanai Lookout and Yokohama Bay offer unforgettable scenery, while Judd Trail and Kawela Bay provide something completely different from the traditional beach session.
